THE DEVASTATED REGIONS.
Berlin, Oct. 7.
"
Loucheur and Rathenau have signed a protocol declaring that France and Germany desire to co-operate in the reconstruction of the devastated regions of France. Arrangements have been made for the largest possible supplies of machinery, implements and raw materials, and consignments will be effected by both sides, through private organisations. The total value of supplies till May 1, 1925, must rot exceed seven milliards of gold marks with the reservation that supplies must be used only for purposes of reconstruction. The execution of the protocol will be supervised by a commission of three, namely, a Frenchman, a German and another chosen by, mutual agreement or by the Swiss President.

In connection with the abandonment of the Rubber Producers Corporation scheme it is stated that the support was smaller than was expected. Owners of 769,000 acres of planted area provision- ally approved of its principles out a total planted area of 3,320,000 no723. The minimum acreage considered necessary to give efect to the scheme bad been £xed at 2.200,000.
FIRE ON LINER.
Capetown, Oct. 7.
A court of inquiry into the fire on the Commonwealth liner Port Augusta found that every endeavour had been made to extinguish the fire. It completely exonerated the captain, officers and crew and declared" that the fire arose in consequence of spontaneous combustion in ane clearfield coal shipped at New York.
SHIPYARD WORKERS WAGES.

A court formed under the Industrial Courts Act to consider the war-time increases granted to shipyard workers has decided that the increases of forty-five and thirty-five per cent. be reduced to tea per cent. cwing to a slamp in the industry.
