OIL IN CHINA...

The world search for fresh oil- fields has resulted in rangwed activity in this direction in China, which experts aver has boundless possibilities in this direction. American, Japanese and British projecta are afoot for the exploit. ation of China's ol-fields. From hara seen, reports which we |thare appears no doubt that China does possess very valuablə paten- tialities in oil production, but no tangible results can be expected until the chaos which rules in the land is eliminated, and in l China possesses a real Govern ment-whether in Canton or in

NORTHERN CANADA LAS QIL. AREA. A Big oil-field has been found In Northern Canada by Domin- ion investigators who have now returned. They declare that the Mackenzie river deposit is the largest on the continent, with an ares of a hundred miles long and sixty miles wide. Mr. Howard Colletry, one of the investigators. will report to the Ministry of Mines that the oil is of the high- est grade that he has ever seen. Coal and shale abound. Mount- ed police are now guarding the region, which is 950 miles east of Yukon and 2,000 miles north of Victoris.

EUROPEAN IRON AND STEEL MARKETS.

The latest mail advices from London indierte that there is little of renewed interest in the iron and steel markets. Certain forms of raw and finished material have hardened to a trifling extent, des- pite which there exista a wide- spread belief in lower prices in the future for the general run of metallurgical products. At the momen: prices are more or less nominal Foundry iron by reason of its scarcity is naturally very frm, and will remain so until the production of that particular grade is materially lucreased and the costs of manufacture Yeewoocheung, from are sensibly reduced. There is a superabundance of other irons. From France, continued, though alight, improvement is reported. A few more works have started, Belgium reports quite a good in crease of busineæ, but ibis is not expected to continue. The German manufacturers are trying to cheapen their labour costs.
