water level had been reduced to
furnace tubes whilst the nil burn- fers were in action, thus beating the dry plates to a temperature at which they were too soft to with- stand the pressure of steam in the boiler. The Engineer-Surveyor- in-Chief to the Board of Trade remarks that there is no doubr that this explosion was the result of overheating, due to a shortage of water in the boiler. The evid- ence is clear on the point as to the boiler having been pumped up to the proper working level before the top manhole door was put on, and it would appear that the water level was reduced after the fires were lit, probably by an un- suspected escape daring the pros cess of circulating the water by means of a pump so arranged as to draw water from the boiler blow-down valves and discharge it to one of four different: direc- tions through a four-way cock. The water haring disappeared from the water-column gusge glasses, those in charge, for some reason or another, mistook 'empty guage glasses for fall ones, and all their

short time before the explosion occurred, appear to have been directed towards reducing the amount of water in the boiler in which it was already dangerousky low. Au operation whereby the water іл
boiler is circulated by drawing water from the lower part and pumping it in again at a higher level ro=" qatres an intimate knowledge" of all the pump connections, great care and intelligence should be observed in manipulating them. In this case, a junior engineer was in "charge, and some confu- sion appears to have taken place with regard to the connections, which no doubt resulted in the loss of a considerable amount of water. The subsequent mistake made by the chief engine-in treating the boiler as overfilled is. the report state, quite inerplic lable.
