Competition on Swatow
Bangkok Run.
A Japanese company has enter ed the field for a share of the coolia passanger and cargo trade between Swatow and Bangkok, ji was learned in Hongkong this morning. A bid for business, which up till now has been almost entirely in the hands of Messrs. Jardins Matheson & Co., and Messrs. Butterfield & Swire, is being made by the Yamashita: Kisen Kaisha, who will provide a monthly service of cargo steamers running from Japanese ports, via the China Coast and Hongkong to the Siam port. Announcement of the inaugura-: tion of the new line came as a surprise to shipping men in Hong- kong, but its establishment is in keeping with the plan of the Yamashita Eisen Kaisha to develop regular lines wherever its tramp trade is possessed of potentialities, as in this case.
The ports of call of the new line will be Osaka, Kobe, Amoy. Swatow, Hongkong, Saigon and Bangkok. The route both out- wards and homewards will In- clade all parts, it is stated. The first ship to take up the run is the Fukui aro No. 3, which sailed from Japan ports at the end of) Juna direct for Bangkok with a fall cargo of general lines. On the return voyage from Siam the Fukui Mara No. 3 will call at the ports, which it is intended to trade with, the vessel being duel at Hongkong about August 21.
Four steamers of about 2,000 tons deadweight will be engaged in the service. Following the Fukui Maru will be the Ausbin. Maro, the Kazan Maru and the Toyo Maru. The freight on out- ward voyages will mostly con- siss of general cargoes from Japan and coolies from Amoy and Swatow for Bangkok. Return: ing, rice shipments from Siam and Saigon for Hongkong and Japan will be the main source of
revenue.
