cherishes benevolence and kindness, whose love for the universe fills his heart, and that you can exemplify the desire of heaven to preserve its creations in saving the several millions, who are, as it were, suspended in mid air, so as to eradicate an evil which has been in existence for tens of years. Upon your Excellency's arrival in your country, we pray that you will make the matter known to the (supreme) Government, requesting it to extend its benevolent rule and to outspread its good will (towards all men). We earnestly beg that your Excellency will take the matter in hand as speedily as possible, which is our most sincere wish. Then, not only the people of Kwangtung will feel deeply grateful, but the whole populace of China will look up and rely upon you; and though to the lapse of thousands and myriads of years, they will not fail to sing your praise. Furthermore, the reputation which Great Britain has already gained for virtue in the Western Countries and amongst the whole world will spread more than ever. With sedulous sincerity we anxiously await your order, and most respectfully beg to remain.
