THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE.
THE FIGHTING.

To-Day's News from Canton.
Mr. De Valera to Consult his Colleagues.
(Reuter's Service. }
London, July 21. A cor monique states that Mr. Lloyd George and Air. De Valera conferred for an hour to-day. The basis of a formal conference has pot yet been found. Mr. De Valera has arranged to return to Ireland to-morrow, and will communicate with Mr. Lloyd George again after further discussion with bis colleagues.
Optimism Preserved.
London, July
While some quarters in Dublin fear that a bitch has occurred in the Irish negotiations,in well-informed quarters generally there is still optimism. There is no disposition to consider the negotiations broken off. It is expected that Mr. De Valers will submit the whole case to Dail Eireann, which can modify, if advisable, the pledges entered into before Mr. De Valera's conversations with Mr. Lloyd George. Well-informed circles in Londen are confident that the Irish delegation will soon return to Loadan.
Later.
In explanation of the Irish situation it is pointed out that the mast hopeful sign is the continuance of the trace.
The Earl of Craze, in the Hose of Lords last evening, optimis- tically declared that if the negotiations prove successful, and at present "I am glad to say they seem charged with hope." it is conceivable that an assembly of Parliament may be necessary in
the autorun.
It is pointed out that Mr. De Valers and his colleagues were elected by Dail Eireann on a republican ticket, and therefore do not possess authority to sbate she demand.
A prominent Irishman in London last evening declared, "We are no less optimistic to-day than we were two days ago."
