SUBSIDY TO FORMOSAN LINERS. In regard to the revision of the amount of the subsidy to the Formosan liners relative to the framing of the Budget for next financial year, the Govern- meat-General of Formosa has been negotiating with the N.Y.K. and the O.S.K. Mr. Kafuku, Managing Director of the DS K. representing the two companies, has gone down to Formosa and is now in negotiation with the au- thorities. During the boom, they took a strong attitude, but are now, owing to the shipping de-* pression, in more conciliatory insod, especially as they think that the Formosen line bas hope- ful prospects. An early amicable settlement is expected,

The Uchida Shipyard at Koy- asu-cho, Yokobama, has fallen upon evil days, and arragements have been made for the purchase of its interests by the Osaka Iron- works, the name of the yard being changed to the Yokohama Iron- works. The yard has disraised employees in batches,' but there are still 1,230 workers in its employ. Fally expecting dismis- sal, says a Yokohama massage to the Ashi, these workers de- manded some time ago a grant of retiring allowance, in case of to six months' pay. On consideration, however, the management of the company has come to the con- clusion that the demand of the workers cannot be accepted. On the morning of the 20th instant. the framen were summoned to the offices, a formal notification was given them by the Maongers of the various Departments that all the workers, numbering 1,230, would be dismissed with retiring allowance of two weeks" wages." This announcement fell so far short of the expecta- tions of the workers that there prevails much discontent among them. They agreed to send a deputation to Kobe personally-to appeal to M. Uchida for more | retiring allowance. Mr. Uchidas residence at Suma and the Uchkla Kisen Kaishi in the former Settlement have been gardal by- Ia few detectives.
