SHIPPING NEWS.

CHINESE SHIPBUILDING, The following regulations hawa been adopted by the Ministry of Communications with regard to shipping: (1) Shipping companies registered with the Government may roo÷ive subsidies for a period. of five years on a soule to be drawn up by the Ministry of Communications; (9) Subsidien may be granted if the follow- ing requirements are fulälled = Ships for ocean navigation must be ateelbuilt within 15 years with a tonnage of 4,000 and a spoed of 11 knots; ships for home water navigation must be stoel- built within 20 years with a too- nage of 2,000 and a speed of 10

nota: ships for international rivar navigation may be of either stee) · for wood but must be 800 tons with speed of 8 knots and within 20 years of construction; (3) Ships for ocean navigation may be sub- sidized at the rate of $0.20 per ton per 1,000 knots travelled and $C.10 par ton per 1,000 knots travelled in the case of ships for home water navigation; (i) Subsidien will be reduced by 5 per cent. yearly for ships of ocean or bome water navigation which have been constructed over ten years; (5) Ships may have an additi nat 3 per cent ubsidy if they have been coua.ructed by Chinese builders or in Chinese shipyards; (6) The approval of the Ministry of Communications must ba obtained of passenger and freight charges, and a redue ion of ang specified item may be demanded; (7) Subsidized ships must carry C. P. O. mails and post-1 and shipping inspectors as may be ap- pointed from time to time by the Ministry of Communcations. Subsidized companies most em- ploy the graduates of the Mercau- Lite Shipping Colleges.
