THE IRISH QUESTION.
London, June 23
Mr. Lloyd George has written to Mr. Devalers, President of tha Irish Republic, saying that the Government is anxious that the King's appeal for conclliation shall not be in vain. They therefore in- vite Devatora and any of his colleagues, to whom safeconduct will ba granted, to come to London to explore to the utmost with the Pre- mier of Northern Ireland, Sir James Craig, the possibility of a settlement.
Mr. Lloyd George in his letter says the Government make the Invitation with a fervent desire to end the ruinous conflict which for centuries has embittered the relations of the people of Eng- land and Ireland, who ought to live in neighbourly harmony and whose cooperation would mean so much not only to the Empire but, to humanity.
'
A similar letter in alternative terms has been sent to Sir James Craig.
The Premier's action is hailed as a praiseworthy disregard of personal dignity and of the forms commonly governing negotiations. It is regarded as marking a supreme effort on the part of the Govern- ment to establish peace and as a prelude to the abandonment of a policy which is neither war nor peace, because, in the event of an unfavourable response, the Government will have no alternative but to take up arms in a determined spirit and accomplish by force what is apparently unachievable otherwise,
THE COAL STRIKE.
Londen, June 25
Mr. Lloyd George has invited the coalowners and the miners to a joint conference at the Board of Trade on the 27th inst. Sir Robert Horne presiding.
The Miners' Executive to-day consulted representatives of the Trade Union Congress and the Labour Party and thereafter accepted the Premier's invitation to a canference with the coalowners on the 27th inst. It is assumed that the efforts of the labour leaders will be directed to reaching a satisfactory settlement and as the Miners' Executive is prepared to relinquish the demand for a [national pool the prospect of an early resumption is brighter.
is even hoped the miners will return to work on 4th July. Miners' Executive still hope to secure the Government grant of ter millions.
