A JAPANESE SHIPPING REVIEW,
A Government Departmental review states: Although the ex- |change rates on Britain havo da- clined and the freight rates on special commodities have been lowered, the European line basso far been unable to attract any adequate consignments on the uutward voyage. On the home- ward voyage, the general trade has also been very, stagnant, and most ships bring little besidas materials for the construction of warships and other special consignments. The liners on the North American run can hardly fill half their holds on the ootzoing royages. Shipmanis to New York have been increas- ing by degrees since the middle of March, however. The movement of commodities from the Pacific
coast to the Orient has also be- gan, the larger portion of which movement is represented by tim- ber, the rate on which is low. From New York, there are some

ships. Business on the outward voyages of the South American line, effected by .he worldwide depression. bas deteriorated remarkably since last autumn, and more especially since last January. Both the Eastern and Westers runs are now at the lowest ebb of depres- sion. Wool and bark from
■ | Argentine to Japan are present- ing somewhat brisk features. On the other hand, Chilean nitre, an important factor on the Western line, has been scarce, though small shipments have come to be effected of late. Australian livers from Japan have been unable to 61 any more than 50 to 50 per cent. of their capacity. Since April the South Sea trade has shown signs of revival on the opt- ward run, while the bomeward voyage continues in a state of dépression, shipments for Hong- kong alone filling the ships. There is a possibility, however, of a revival becoming manifest soon, as Japanese merchants have bought large quantities of Java, sugar. Difficulties are felt in the way of securing consignments for Calcutta, as the market there has become somewhat quiet, not to speak of the deadening effects of exchange fluctuations, but there is a comparatively good move- ment of cotton yarn, piece goods. cement, glass-ware, etc. On the homeward service. Rangoon exporis rice, beans, lead etc. to various ports, although exports from Calcutta still con- tinue depressed. For some time, beginning at the end of March, a thriving tone was prevalent in the Shanghai trade owing to the tranquillity of Chinese exchange as well as to the exportation of bargains in copper, paper, etc. But recently, the steamere havŞ been only half filled, owing to the depreciation of exports of cotton yarn and cloth (the staple. lines of exports), as well as other. merchandise. On the other hand. the homeward ran is enjoying such prosperity that the ships are almost filled.
