SILENT WIRELESS TRANSMITTER.

A 1-KW. quenched-spark transmitter which has heen introduced by the Marconi Com- pany as standard equipment for ships at sea has the advantage

over

the rotary gap type of transmitter that the spark takes place with little or no noise, so that no silence cabinet is requir ed and the installation can be made conveniently small. It consists of 30 орел Berial circuit, inductively coupled to a closed oscillatory circuit which contaics the quenched gap, as in- ductance and a mica-dielectric condenser. The latter circuit derives its power from the second- ary of a transformer which is fed from a 500-cycls motor alternator driven from the ship's direct current supply. Signalling is effected by a Morse key which interrupts the low-voltage alter- nating supply. Four standard wave-lengths are normally avail- able, 300, 450,600 and 800 metres; either of the three higher values, is obtained by means of a three-

PACIFIC CONFERENCES. Apparently due to the depres- sion of overseas trade, foreign | sbipping agencies in Kobe have begun to part company with the treight anion, say's a Japanese paper.

In this connection, the China Mail Company separated from the Pacific freight union some time azo, followed by the Java-China-Japan Lins quite recently, Messrs. Strathers and the Admiral Line companies are reported as being about to follow the example sooner or later. Nothing is said in the statement bere translated about the Japan- ese lines. As a matter of fact, in spite of all the meetings between the American and Japanese ship- ping companies, the Pacific con- ferences remain a farce. It hap pens frequently that where two ships ara nominally charging the same freight the one offering superior facilities will be left empty while the other fills up It is believed that there are very simple reasons, but it is very dificult to discover good evidence. This means that the Toyo Kisen Kaisha, Java-Pacific, China Mail and other lines will be compelled to bid against American-owned and | operated lines. The officials said there would be 's, rate war, bat a sharp adjustment of rates would probably be made.
