TERRIBLE OUTRAGE IN IRELAND,

London, May 17.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 1921.

There were between 20 and 40 violent deaths in Ireland at the week-end. The country is horrifled at the brutal murder at Gort in Galway of the District Inspector of Police, Caplain Blake, and his young wife, Captain Cornwallis and Lieutenant MacCreedy, bolh of the Seventeenth Lancers. They were motoring from a tonnis party when they were ambushed. The assassins ordered Mrs. Blake away, but she heroically refused to leave her husband, whereupon all four were riddled with bullets, Capt. Cornwallis was a member of a prominent Kont family. His two brothers were playing for Kent against Hampshire when the news arrived, and they withdrew from the match.

JAPAN'S CROWN PRINCE.

London, May 17.

In glorious weather Prince Hirohito arrived at Aldershot. His visit was marked with every honour and distinction the garrison could pay. Prince Hirohito was accompanied by Admiral Konaturi. He was received by Lord Cavau. A salute of twenty-one guns was fired, the Japanese standard hoisted and Japanese anthem played. At their parade the Coldstream Guarda gave the royal salute. After reviewing the Guards Prince Hirohito paid a series of visits.

THE OPIUM EVIL.

London, May 17.

In a letter to the Times Sir W. J. Collins, British plenipotentiary at the Opium Conferences, dealing with the progress made through the League of Nations towards the universal effectivo execution of the International Convention, declares that there is little doubt that the production of opium and morphia, and probably cocaine, in recent years has greatly exceeded any conceivable legitimate or medical use. As long as this is so suppression of their abuse is foredoomed to failure. Control from the source and international co-operation are essential to combat the evil.

AMERICA AND BRITAIN.

Kansas City, May 17. Addressing St. Andrew's Society, Sir Auckland Geddes denied that there was any possibility of Britain being drawn into conflict with the United States owing to the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. He declared that such rumours were German propaganda. He em- phasised that the Treaty specifically provided that it should not operate against any nation with which Britain or Japan had a gen- eral arbitration treaty, and such a treaty existed between Bri. tain and the United States in the form of the "Peace Commission Treaty."

ITALIAN ELECTIONS.

Rome, May 11.

Though the elections were orderly in the chief cities, disturbances in the rural districts resulted in casualties, variously estimated at from eight to fifteen killed. It is already evident that the Com- munists are badly defeated.

THE AALAND ISLANDS.
