PRINCE HENRY
MAJORITY..
The King's Third Son Comes of Age:
The King's third son, Prince Henry, has celebrated his twenty- first birthday. Like his brothers and sister, with the solitary ex- ception of the Prince of Wales, he was born at York Cottage, Sandringham and it was there that his early years were passed writes Mr. Guy Heseltine.
When he was little more than
man.
a baby a visitor asked him what he wished to be when he became a A soldier," was bis em- phatic reply, and, to that he has adhered ever since. No other career would ever have appealed to him, and it is to-day his great ambition to follow in the foot. steps of the Duke of Connaught, with whom he has much in
common.
The King having given bis assent to Prince Henry becoming a soldier, bis education proceeded upon different lines from his eld brothers, who passed through t Royal Naval College at Osborne and Dartmouth. He was sent as soon as he reached a suitable Age, to Eton, and having been trained in the "Army Class" there, proceeded to the Royal Military College at Sandhurst,
He had not long been at school before ho manifested # keen interest in all outdoor sports and games, and became extremely proficient at many of these, including cricket and cross- country running. He is quite the best oricketer that the Royal Family has ever possessed: Upon one occasion when an impromptu match was being played at Windsor, Prince Honry was the captain of one side and, having just dismissed the Prince of
he Wales,
turned to Я companion and said, "We shall win all right now; there is only father to come in, and I can bowl him any time I like." He was as good as his word, for the King was sent back from the Arst ball be received from Prince Henry. At Sandhurst Prince Henry took great interest in "Rugger," and it is understood. that was only at the desire of the Queen that he did not take a more prominent part in thi game, as his play at times showen him to be well worth a place in the first fifteen. His next love was polo, and he played great deal with the neighbouring Will- ington Club, showing a real aptitude for the game.
At the present time he is a subaltern in the King's Roval Rifle Corps, but for several months past has been attached to the 13th, Husears at Aldershot. He has devoted himself very seriously to his military duties, and it is agreed by all who have beon brought into contact with him that be possesses all those quali ties that go to made up a good soldier. At the present time he is looking forward to receiving his second "pip," and his one regret is that, on account. of his youth, he was not able to take part in the war.
