AVAILABLE MEASUREMENT OF OIL IN TANKS.
The increasing use of oil fuel lends special interest to a British device for measuring at any in- stant the amount of oil in the fuel tank. It consists of a belt. like chamber at the bottom of the tank connected with a hand- operated air pump. When the pump is worked, it increases the air pressure in the chamber until it overcomes the pressure of the liquid and allows bubbles to
escape. As the pressure of the liquid depends upon its depth the air pressure thus produced by the pump is a measure of the depth. A gauge is provided to register the air prossure and it can be marked to give direct readings of the depth. The air pump and gauge can be placed at a distance from the tank and will give. accurate reading under all conditions of temperature, MANUFACTURE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE PIPES, Pipes made of reinforced con- erote have been used for many years past for conveying water and other purposes this con- crete haing much less costly than iron or steel. Until recently auch pipes had been cast in moulds, but a centrifugal process, originated in Australia, has lately been introduced into Great Britain whereby the cost of the pipes is lessened and batter results are achieved. A tube, of which the bore equals the outside diameter of the pipe to be made, is carried horizontally on-friction- wheels, and provision is made for rotating it at a high speed. After a cage of steel reinforcement has been put into the tubo, a ring, equal in thickness to the con- crete pipe, is fixed inside each end. While the tube is rotating, enough wet concrete is introduc-
