This year also has borne ita full share of losses, but we have every hope of its closing with a satisfactory balance in hand. You will doubtless have
heard of the disastrous fire which occurred in Shanghai on the 11th of this month, and you will, I am sure, be gratified to learn that the Company is only interested for the eum of The. 30,000. This fire was one of the worst experienced by the Northern Port, and I think you will agree that we may consider ourselves extremely fortunate in escaping - s0 lightly. The surplus to be dealt with at this meeting is $337,092.06, and we recommend the payment of the usual dividend of $27 per share; the appropriation of £16,000 at 3/16.$102,400 to the Re- Insurance Fund, and that the balance of $13,692.06 be placed to the credit of Investment and Exchange Fluctuation Account. This Account will then stand at A figure of $81,480.75, which your Directors considor sufficient to meet all calls that may be made upon it. You will, I trust, approve of the usual bonus on their salaries of 15% being granted to the staff. I do not think that there is any- thing further in the accounts which requires special mention by me, but after the resolution which I am about to propose has been seconded I shall be glad to satisfy to the best of my ability any enquiries arising out of them which shareholders may wish to put, I now propose the following resolution:-
"That the report and accounts 48 presented, including the payment of a dividend of $27 per share, an addition to the Ro- insurance Fund of £16,000 at exchange 3/112-8102,400, the transfer of $13,692.06 to the credit: of Investment and Exchange Fluctuation Account, and the payment to the Staff of 15 per cent. upon their salaries be adopted and passed."
