The Twenty-Fourth Ordinary C. M. G., D. 8. O.. Assistant Annual Meeting of Shareholders Millitary Attache at the French in the Company will be held at Embassy in London, recently the Offices of the Company. St. delivered lecture, entitled George's Building, No. 6 Con- "From Charleroi to the Marne." naught Road, on Thursday the Colonel Fagalde, who is known for the purpose of receiving a 24th March 1921, at 11 o'clock a.m. as one of the most brilliant of Statement of Accounts and the Staff officers, was so described by Lord Askwith, who introduced Report of the General Managers for the year ending 31st Decem- the lecturer.

ber 1920, and electing a Consult The object of Colono! Fagaldoing Committee and Auditors. was to give to his audience an exact idea of tho' events which took place in 1914, from the time of the concentration French armies up to the battle of the Marne, in that field of operations which was comprised between the Sambre and the Marne,

of the

Colonel Fagalde was in a posi- tion to give the official view of the French Hoadquarters Staff of the events in question. He gave an account of the hattio of Char- leroi, which raged from August 21 to 23, and of the famous con- forence which took place at St. Quentin, at which Sir John French, General Joffro, General Laurazao, General D'Aniade, and members of the respective staffs, together with the liaison officers, took part.

He went on to describe the natural alarm created on the last day of August, when the Allies were informed by the staff of the Fifth Army, then stationed at Laon, that a mass of German cavalry had just received orders to deploy from the district north- west of Noyon on to the plains south of Laon, which movemont had forced the Fifth Army to bend its fine of march towards the south-east. The removal of French Headquarters to Craonno and to Jonchery immediately followed.

HISTORIC SATCHEL,

At the latter place, during the night of September 1 to 2, there was brought to the lecturer the satchel of a German staff officer of the Fifth Cavalry Division, who had been killed in his motor car by a French patrol. In this satchel, destined to become historic, was found a treasure of inestimable value-a plah giving full details of the march, which started the following day, of the whole of the First German Army under von Kluck.

The officer's satchel contained, in addition to food and articles of clothing, blood-stained documents which showed that he had boan to von Kluck's head quarters for instruction and was on his way back to the Fifth Cavalry Division when he was intercepted. andì killed by B French infantry patrol,

But tucked away under food and clothing was found a map, on which were tracod all the movements to be undertaken after Septemnor 1, by von Kluck's Army. The position of every column was plainly marked, with their heads and rearguards, and the hours of departure and arrival at their destinations.

But what was of supreme im- portance was the discovery that

von Kluck's plan. already known to the French Staff, of marching into the valley of the Oise, had been changed into one of a direct march on Paris, to begin on the morning of Septem- ber 2.

Colonel (then Captain) Fagalde at once telephoned this informa- tion to G.H.Q., and immediately followed up his message by send ing the map and other documents by motor ear to the same destina- tion. The telophone message and the map have been carefully preserved, and there can be little doubt that to this discovery is mainly owing the success which attended General Gallieni's man- oeuvre of throwing a hitherto unknown and unsuspected army on von Kluck's flank, with the resultant victory of the Marne and the German retreat to the Alene.

THE HONGKONG LAND RECLAMATION CO., LTD.

NOTICE.

The Royal Exchango, beneath Lloyd's, is now a national picture gallery. Great episodes of history are represented by panels around the walls. Recently the Duke of York unvailed a picture presented by Lord Marshall, who was Lord Mayor of London in l'eace year, 1918-19. The panel has been painted by Mr. Frank O. Salisbury, R B.A., and is a brilliant piece of work. The subject is the scene on the steps of St. Paul's Cathedrui when the King and Queen were present HE the Thanksgiving Service on July 6th. 1919. Asing Secretary. well as the members of the Royal Family. Lord Marshall, Sheriffs and officers, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of London are prominent in the ¡ picture.

The work stands out in very rich tones between a war episode, the King and Queen visiting the battle fields of France, and a more subdued picture of ancient times representing the Master of the Vintners' Company entertaining a merry group of monarchs, including the Kings of England, France, Scotland, Denmark and Cyprus.
