The Governor of Hongkong gives me leave of absence for Six months only, but states that I am entitled by length of service to an extension for one year and two months, making the full period...

I therefore respectfully ask for an extension on half pay.

Moreover, I trust that the Chief Justice and the Attorney General of Hongkong (both now in England) would, if applied to, certify that I have been an efficient Servant in the humble office I occupy...

My office is much inferior to what I might have looked for from my parentage and education.

On my arrival in England, I stayed with my brother, Mr. R. W. Barrington, at Kingston Hill, Surrey. Having just recovered from illness, I am unable to travel at present.

I have the honor to enclose a certificate from the gentleman under whose care I am, regarding the state of my health. I am desirous to return to London as soon as practicable and present myself at the Colonial Office.

As my six months' leave will soon expire, I am anxious to be informed that my leave will be extended.

I have the honor to be, My Lord, Your Lordship's most obedient, humble servant,

Theod. 10 Barrington

The Right Honourable Lord Kimberley, Secretary of State, Colonial Office
