Alluding first to Japan, I would point out that 10 years ago our total trade with that country was 888,358,071, states Mr. Thomas W. Lamont, of Messrs. J. P. Morgan and Co. In the year ending June 30, 1923, that same trade had grown to the proportions of $980,367,930. of Japan's total export and import trade, approximately 40 per cent. is now with the United States of America. In the year 1919 over 95 per cont. of Japan's valuable trade in silk was with the United States:
