The Plight of the New Poor.
Once again the servant question is occupying people's attention, writes a housewife in the London Morning Post. On the one hand we hear of frantic mistrossos olamouring for maida, and unable to capture a solitary "Tweony "; and on the other hand we are told of armies of unemployed women who before the war were content, to cook and clean; opon doors, and wait at table, but who now utterly refuse to enter domestic service.
What is wrong? Is there no cammon ground on which mis trose and maid can meet and stand together, or is it a case of "Ard novor the twain ehall meet"
A great deal of nonsense is talked about domestic service, and as far as I can gather every- thing is said for the handmaiden and against the unfortunate mis- treas of the house.
I believe the real difficulty is the fact that, owing to high prices, reduced incomes, and very greatly increased wages, the ser- vant that overyone wants to find is the good, single handed
