MOTOR HINTS.
FILLING THE COOLING SYSTEM
If water is found to be low, the cooling system should not be filled too suddenly while the en gino is hot. Pour in about half a bucket of water while the engine is running and walt a few minutes before adding more. Cold water coming into contact with red-hot cylinders will crack them,
EFFECT OF SPARK KNOCK.
Spark knock occurs when the engine is labouring, especially when going up hill. The result of it is to weaken the power of the. engine. To avoid this, the spark should be retarded as soon as the knook is beatd.
BUTTON HOOK AS TOOL. Among the tools in the tool kit should be an ordinary button hook. Among its many uses aro especially, fishing out small parts from inaccessible places and pull- ing out cotter pins. For the latter use it is about the best tool that could be used.
CARE WITH WIRES.
In removing insulation from stranded wires, be careful not to cut any of the fine threads. These are so thin that they are easily cut with the insulation, Each of these strands does its share in carrying the current to the lamps.
SPRING LUBRICANT.
A highly satisfactory compound to spread between the leaves of the springs consists of paraffin and graphite. A paraffin candia can he melted down, graphite thrown into the molton wax and the whole stirred thoroughly.
FILLING THE RADIATOR. The radiator should be filed slowly in order that the water may pass into the whole system. Hofore assuming that there is enough water in the cooling sys. tom, it is bost to start the motor and let it run slowly, then to continun pouring the water into the radiator until full.
CRANK INTERMITTENTLY. When the car is hard to start, do not keep your foot on the starter button until the engine goes. That places a heavy drain on the battory. It is better to crank a second or two at a time, | stopping between times to change the position of the choko or the spark or gas levers,
TO CLEAN COOLING SYSTEM. Clogging of the cooling system may be provonted by cleaning it at least twice a year with soda. Dissolve about two pound of it in hot water and pour into the radiator, running the car as usual. After a day's use, drain the radiator and fill with clown water, changing the water again the next day. This will remove the scum that forms in the system. especially the radiator.
USE. OF SPOT LIGHT, The spot light should not be directed straight ahead. The proper direction of that light is to the right of the automobile. A spot light directed straight ahead 18 worse in its effects on motorists coming in the opposite direction than a strong headlight.
