With reference to my letter of the 14th instant; respecting the detention at Hongkong of Messageries Steamer "Ava" I am directed by Earl Granville to transmit to you, for the information of the Earl of Kimberley, a copy of a despatch from Her Majesty's Minister at Paris inclosing a copy of note which in obedience to the instructions addressed to his Excellency on the subject
