Much indignation has been aroused in Camberwell by the fact that the plague pit on Dea- mark Hill has been laid out and is now used for tennis. For years the ground has been fenced off. and has always been regarded by people in the locality as a sacred spot because during the Great Plague of 1655 the dead carts visited it at sight to bury the victima of the potbreak. Severel hundreds of people were buried at Denmark Hill, as there were in the other plague pits in Lon- doo, at Oakley-crescent, City- road and Finsbury-square.
