recollection of having told the Governor and the Commodore that I would see that means could be devised to correct the evils complained of, and the idea of stationing a steam Gunboat ready for immediate action, occurred to, and was suggested by me during the conversation I had with the Viceroy.

If in the opinion of Lord Granville my action in the matter has been incautious, I can only express my great regret at the occurrence, and that I shall be more careful for the future.
