if admitted, the remonstrance and protests of the Commander "Ava", the French Consul of the "Ava",

and the chief of the Staff of the French Admiral. These

proceedings, the Governor states, took place entirely without his knowledge or approval, and also without the cognizance of the Judge of the Vice Admiralty

Court.

In the course of the same evening, the Governor being applied to by the French Consul, the Agent of the Messageries,

and the Chief of the Staff of the French Admiral, the latter of whom protected against the seizure,

the four sent for the Colonial Secretary and feeling satisfied that the issue of the warrant was illegal and the proceeding unjustifiable, and seeing that no delay would aggravate the evil, caused the acting Attorney-General and the Judge of the Vice Admiralty Court to be communicated with and the warrant was withdrawn and the ship released on the same night, which enabled her to sail

at an early hour the following morning, some explanations of a friendly nature
