AVIATOR'S TERRIBLE FATE.
Paris, March 23. General Laperrine, who set out from Southerna Algeria on February 18 to fly across the Sahara desert has been found dead south-east of Interbarrakah where his aeroplane had crashed. General Laperrine had beent severely wounded and had suffered great agony from injuries and lack of food. The pilot and mechanic are alive. They had wandered for two days in search of assistance and, finding none, returned to the machine where the search party found them-Havas."

The "Ottawa Journal" states that Mr. Ballantyne, Minister for Marine, has ordered the demobilisation of the Canadian Naval Forces, except five hundred men belonging to the Naval College. SOUTH AFRICAN PARLIAMENT.
Capetown, March 22. Parliament has opened. Mr. Buxton announced that the result of the elections is that the Smuts Ministry remains in office and submits itself to the judgment of the House. He foreshadowed a notable programme of social reforms.
ANOTHER FALSE REPORT.
London, March 22. Reuter is authoritatively informed there is no truth; in the report that an agreement, cabled on March 20, has been concluded between Azerbaidjan and the Turks or that any negotiations have occurred thereanent. An official denial has already been issued at Tiflis and the Azerbaidjan Foreign Minister has stated that all rumours hereanent are devoid of foundation.
NAVAL ASPIRATIONS.
Washington, March 24. Mr. Butler, Chairman of the Naval Committee, re- ported to the House of Representatives that in 1924 Brig tain will have sixty battleships, the United States forty- seven, France twenty-six and Japan fifteen, but the United States ships, will be about equal to British in power.
