CAUSES OF MISUNDER-
STANDING.
Right-minded citizens, both in Great Britain and Americà, bave recently foued cause for serious misgiving in the misunderstand- ing and estrangement into which we appear to be drifting. The past six months has seen a dep- lorable accentuation of anti- British propaganda and feeling. in the United States: the rejec-1 tion of the Covenant of the League of Nations by our war time Ally has provoked much as- tonishment and consternation ic Great Britain. What are the causes? More important, what are the probable consequences! What can we do adequately, todeal with an obviously grave situation?
These were sonie of the issues discussed by Lord Charnwood in the course of a special interview with a representative of the Lon- don Observer. There is no man in this country more com-petent to speak upon Anglo-American rela- tions, for Lard Charnwood has spent the best part ofa busy life-time in the effort to link the two peoples more closely together, and is known throughout both countries as the author of a brilliant_biographica study of Abraham Lincoln..
Lord Charnwood thought that the refusal to ratify the Covenant. as well as much of the feeling against President Wilson and the British people, was due to the President's attitude in booming the Democratic Party at the last election, contrary to the general policy of American Presidents.
This action resulted in the Party's
sever defeat at the polls.
