STORAGE OF HIDES.
AN OFFENSIVE TRADE.
1
At the Police Court, before Mr. N. L. Smith, this morning, a Chinese dealer in untanned skins was charged under the Offensive Trades Ordinance with carrying on an offensive trade by the storage of raw skins on his
premises at Sai On Lane, at West Point.
Mr. M. H. Turner appeared for the defence. He stated that he understood from the Ordinance that it concerned anybody who carried on the process of tanning. He was prepared to argue on this point. The defendant pleaded not guilty, but his caso Was that

he had been carrying on the business of dealer in hides for the last twenty years. He had constantly applied for a licence but had been refused. His premises were located in a where there were many other similar establisį ments. It was
customary as he (Mr. Turner) could ascertain to give! licence, to those persons who did business in tanning. The defendant, however, was not engaged in this particular business. All he did was to buy the hides from China and resell them to tanners here. No doubts they smelt a bit, but
he did not prepare them.
Mr. Turner submitted that there was no reason why the defendant should not be given a licence when it was given to nthers, who prepared the skins. He

His Worship:-I cannot give the order.
Mr. Turner:-The position is this, that the defendant is charged with lacking what he could noti obtain.
An official of the 'Sanitary Board stated that it was not customary for the Board to ge into the question as to whether a man's business was wholesale or retail. Neither was the present case brought up to decide as to what sorts of skins the defendant did business in.
