COALOWNERS' PROFITS BILL.
The Bill to limit coalowners to is 2'4 per ton in the coal raised is now complete, and a draft of it in its final form has been considered by a largely attended meeting of coalowners held in London. The Bill, so far as wages are concerned gives effect to the recommends. tions of the Sarkey, Com. mission and it further limits. profits to the extent named above, but it transpires that a very big concession has been made in that a proposal which had been made by the Government to reduce the pre-war standard by 50 per cent. bas been dropped. There were those at a recent meeting who considered this concession not an unmixed blessing 25 it was calculated in a measure to lessen the force
of the opposition that could be shown to the bill. Consideration was also given to the question of a fund to provide for keeping going such collieries as would have to pro- duce cual at a loss, and in regard to this it was represented by the Government that the difficulty would be met. It was decided To continue opposition to the Bill. and to point out that the 1s 2d onle meant id, or less in pre-war values.
