DIVORCE FOR LORD DALMENY,
ON GROUND OF WIFE'S DESERTION.
Lord Dalmeny, Lord Rosebery's eldest son, was granted a decree of divorce recently in the Court of Session, Edinburgh,
The evidence did not occupy more than half an hour.
The action, which was un- defended, was brought by Lord Dalmeny against big
wife, Dorothy Alice Margaret Augusta, Grosvenor, youngest daughter of the late Lord Henry Grosvenor, on the ground of desertion. Lady Dalmeny's address was given as Littletew Grange, Enstone, Ox fordshire.
When. Lord Dalmeny entered the witness-box, the court room was crowded.
WIFE'S COLD LETTERS.
In reply to Mr. T. B. Morison, K.C., M.P., the Solicitor-General, be said the marriage, which took place in 1909, was purely one of affection. They lived happily until 1913. Towards the end of that year he noticed a falling-off in the affections of his wife, a coolness.
Obtaining an appointment on the cavalry corps staff of General | Allenby, be went to France in the winter of 1914.
Mr. Morison: When you were in France you frequently return- ed home? Yes, several times ca ordinary short leave."
While you were in France did you notice anything about the tone of your wife's letters?—The tone of them became colder and colder, and the letters became fewer and fewer until atlast they ceased altogether in December 1916. She never wrote after that. Lord, Dalmeny, inauswer to further questions, said he got his first leave in November 1914, and ) return d to bis home at Bletchley
CEASED TO CARE
Mr. Morison: What did you find-I found that, on hearing I was arriving, my wife left Bletchley.
Were you distressed about that? -Naturally.
I think you had no opportunity of seeing your wife at the time? -None at all.
Id reply to Mr. Morison, Lord Dalmeny said he returned on short leave again in February 1915, and went to Blechley, where

LANE, CRAWFORD
he learned that the same thing A. had happened.
I think that, in October 1915. while you were, in France, you learned that the defender had come to Paris?-I learned ac cidentally that she was on her way to Paris, and I got special leave from the General to see her. I asked my wife why she had taken this attitude, and she said she had ceased to care for me for some four or five years, in fact we were so unsuited that it was a mistake our ever having bean married.
I remonstrated with her at the course she was adopting, and she declared finally that she would never live with me as my wife again; in fact, I think she has never done so since that day."
Continuing, Lord Daimeny said his wife took no notice of letters which he wrote in 1916. In August | of that year, however, Lady Dal- meny wrote one letter, in which she explained her position, say- ing she had no intention what soever of deviating from the line of conduct which she had explain-i ed to him at the Paris interview.
He went on to tell of several visite he made to Bletchley to see the children. On every occasion, except one, he said, his wife left before he arrived. One day, when he went down unexpectedly for the day, she was at home, but she had not known he was coming. She, however, took no notice of him. Even, in June 1917, when he left for Egypt, she did not send him a line to say "Goodbye."
CHANCERY COURT ORDER. On hearing of the serious ill- ness of his father, Lord Rosebery petitioner went to Dalmeny, and asked that the children should be sent to meet him there. Lady Dalmeny refused to allow the children to go, and a Chancery Court order was obtained directing that the children should be sent.
In August last he had a meet- ing with his wife, and she again refused to live with him.
The Marchioness of Crewe, Lord Dalmeny's sister, said she had visited the parties after the marriage. She noticed a change in the attitude of the respondent towards Lord Ddmeny in 1913. Lord Dalmeny's attitude was cold. Lord Dalmeny visited witness when on leave, and told her at the time about the interview in Paris with Lady Dalmény.
Mri Morison: Was he distressed about the result of the interview?- Yes,
His lordship granted a decrea of divorce.
