THREAT OF COAL STRIKE..

London, Feb. 13. There is considerable conflict of opinion as regards the predicted coal strike. Some of the most influential miners' representatives in Parliament declare there is no immediate cause for alarm, on the contrary the coal owners and miners' leaders in South Wales state that a strike is bound to come. They point out the Goverment has been preparing for a long time and buging up all the available coal. Consequently there have been accumulated big reserves.

BOXING Y. FINANCE,

DANGER. TO THE SPORT.

When Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier meet, as they appear likely to, they will not (says "Corinthian" i the Daily! Chronicle) put up nearly so good a battle as the battle which is taking place between promoters and would-be promoters for the ¡right to run the contest.

At present the boxing atmos- phere is disturbed by a whirlwind of "atoms" that take the form of thousands of pounds. Everyone appears to be going to extremes. Even the cool-headed Mr. C. B. Cochran is credited with an offer of approximately £60,000 for a pur and yet I seem to remem- ber that gentleman saying that his limit was £35,000, and that anyone who cared to put up more could have the contest.

Some syndicate, actual or my- thical, in Paris, offered another fortune on top of that £60,000, but they appear to have dropped out of the business. They are 'car- tainly lying low.

END OF THE BOXING WORLD..

There is no doubt that pre- moters of boxing at the present time are in a state of mind that would almost justify anyone in prophesying the end of the box- ing world. This bartering in for- tunes clearly proves that there are men who are prepared to take a chance of losing or making a for- tune upon something like the 1 seconds' business which took place recently at the Holborn Stadium.

This sort of thing is not healthy for the sport of boxing, and it is time that newspapers awoke to the realisation of the fact that some of these offers are not facts. It may be that here and there there are people who find them- selves in a position to put up a purse that seems outrageously! big: but at the present time I do not think that there are many genuine, offers for this contest being made.

COMMERCIALISM IN FRONT OF SPORT. Commercialism must enter into sport that is professional; but when commercialism dominates? sport, as it is doing at the present time, it is bad for sport. If a man engaged in any contest that is supposed to be of a sporting cha racter receives an offer of a sim which means a fortune to him, he is being tempted to an extent that is unnatural. Some men are likely to yield to such a huge Ter, and consent to things that are abhorrent to the natural way of thinking. Others may consent to things that should not be .con- sented to, and then do what they have agreed not to do.

Anyhow these offers of huge purses are bad for the sport and the game of boxing. They can' only be good for the business of! boxing, and for that reason the. Daily Chronicle refuses to pay any regard to any one of the many rumours about these ex- travagant purses.

DRESS CRUSADE.

WOMEN SHOCKED BY FASHION FREAKS.

The approval recently given by Dr. R. S. Copeland, New York's to the Health Commissioner, manner in which women dress has roused the ire of women them- selves. Women health leaders with Dr. entirely disagree Copeland's masculine way of looking at the matter. Dr. Florencei Meredith, of the Y.W.C.A. Health Demonstration Centre, says, in an interview:-

"Down with rouge, high heels, j poder, paint, and perfumery. New York women seem to be dying on their short vanped, high-heeled shoes, while under- neath their rouge their plexions are paier than the lily and by no means 28 pure.

com-

"I walked along Broadway last evening, and noticed the shock-' ingly scant costumes and falsely glaring cheeks of women and girls. It was impossible for me- a woman experienced in the ways of women-to tell the bad girls? from the innocent. Think of the moral effect of this on the young men of this modern Babylon,

"Thank God, in Boston, where I come from, the girls have too much good sense to daub their faces. The New York girl's walk is a wiggle, due to her heels and corsets; in Boston half the women go unlaced.

"We are starting a campaign for respectable clothing for WO- men. The first step will be to try to persuade American women to save their nervous systems - and lengthen lives by sensible foot- The next step will be sen- sible stockings, then blouses, and then clothing generally. "
