NOTICE
GOLDEN LADY IN A SPY BUREAU.
TALE OF BLONDE BEAUTY AND "BLOND BEAST."
Paris: Dec. 13-At Lille an espionage court is inquiring into the war-time story of a centre of German, espionage at a chateau near Antwerp, where the chief was German woman known only as La Dame Blonde" who is said to be the daughter, or niece, of General Heinrich. who was. for a time, German Governor at Lille.
*
Recently a Frenchman of 64, named Blenquart, was arrested as on a charge of having been an agent in the pay of the German authorities.
He deelured that he never gave information to the Germans, and he went onto tell of an amazing story of the Fair Lady."
Ma admitted having been Iseveral times to the mysterious Jehateau near Antwerp, where, he fraid, all the German spy services were centralised, and where "La Dame Blonde " was the big "boss."
As he was taken there each time in a closed automobile, his eyes being laudaged, he is hazy as to the exact whereabouts of the mysterious chateau. But he noticed that
numerous rooms were fitted up as offices, with scures of secretaries. typists. numerous telephone and tele- graph wires, and wireless.
There were many German officers there, but the head of the whole organisation was "La Dame Blonde," a beautiful young woman, tall, thin, with charming ntanners, and with a well-lled
purse.
In a luxuriously-furnished pri- vate office sat the mysterious woman. Before her was a bag full of gold. She had it emptied upon the carpet in order to im- press the visiting spy. Then she tock a small hand-bag, filled it with gold pieces, and handed it to him, saying, "That's for to- day: if you do useful work for us you will soon be rich."
Blanquart pretends that he ac- cepted the money. but never worked for the Fair Lady."
**
Two soldier spies, who are to be tried by a Grenoble court-martial, related recently to the investiga-. ting magistrate that they were taken to the Blonde Lady," who gave them false papers and a big sum of money to go to France.
Their description of the my-. sterious woman seems to corres- pond with that "given by Blan-
Cuart.

Colonel F. V. Holt has been appointed Aeronautical Adviser to the Chinese Government and departs shortly..
The lecture was illustrated by a fine series of private and official photographs, which have not been exhibited before, and the Gaumont Company brings out very clearly Fon the serven the changes (rought about in the neighbourhood of Ypres during the four years of war, and the activities of the troops there. "The Holy Ground of the British Army. as the acturer describes the salient, was the greatest fighting ground of the war. Here five million troops were engaged, one million of whom came back wounded, while 200,000. never came back at all. The pictures are of extra-ordinary interest to the people of this country, for, at one time or an- other there can be but few families which were not represented on this battle-ground.. The story of Ypres was told with unstinted' admiration by an officer who, baving watched the struggle there through the long years of the war, realizes to the full what the British Army accomplished in the selient.
Colonel Wilson concluded his lecture with an appeal regarding the future of this battle-ground. It is only a heap of ruins, he pointed out, but it is an eternal memorial to British valour. Itis only a shell-swept graveyard, but the graves are those of our heroic dead. Since the Armistice Ypres has been disgraced end disfigur- ed, and though until ho laft Ypres he did what he could to restrain people from utterly destroying all that was left of what was after all a burial ground of the British Army, it required far greater authority than he possessed to influence the Belgians to save Ypres. He was confident some- thing would be done, but it should bo done soon, before more estamínets and shops were erapted on this site.
