Sir, With reference to your let ter of the 19th January, 1920, en- quiring whether British merchants can properly engage in business with Germany and Austria, I am directed to inform you that the legal position remains unaltered by the exchange of ratifications as the effect of Ordinance No. 6 of 1919 is to continue the prohibition of the Trading with the Enemy Ordinances until such date as is declared by His Majesty in Coun- cil to be the date of the termina- tion of the present war.
New business with Germany and German-Austria is, however, legal under the general licences which were given by Notifications Yos 750 and 360 in the Government Gazette of the 8th August, 1910. is amended by Notification No. 410 of the 5th September, 1919.
The Restrictions of the Allen Enemies Winding up) Ordinances are, however, still in force and pre- war transactions are also affected by the provisions of the Treaty of Peace Order which was published in the Government Gazette of the 5th January, 1920.--I a, Sir,
