THE STORY OF THE TANKS.

!!

THEIR EVOLUTION AND EMPLOYMENT,

[BY C.B.)

The more one learns, of what may be termed the inner history of the war, with especial reference to its later stages, the greater should be the common spprecia- tion of the part played by the Tanks and by the men who fought in them. As an aid to this ap- preciation it is necessary to Lexamine some of the reasons for

their appearance in the war.

Both sides endeavoured to overcome the stalemate of im- mobibity which was manifesting itself in the early months of 1916, when the contestants had made their positions practically im- pregnable by means of impene- trable thicknesses of barbed wire, enfiladed and swept by in- numerable machine guns, strong- ly entrenched and cunningly hidden. The British first tried to overcome this state of affairs by a prodigious expenditure of high explosive shells, which, while proving capable of destroying the wire, could never be relied upon to wipeout the machine guns, which possessed an uncanny knack of withstanding the in- tensest bombardment. The Ger- called CO their aid "mans

The fascinating story of how this came about is told in a newly published volume of the "Country Life" series, entitled "The Tank Corps," by Major Clough Will- Tams-Ellis. 34:C., and A. hanging in the balance, and from it all they have produced a work

of high order of merit.

Information is also given on a number of points in connection with the actual Tank which have been kept behind the closely. guarded veil of secrecy so long. and which have aroused either curiosity or undoubted interest in the minds of those whose lot has beer cast away from this particular sphere of wartime activity. To many queried details with regard to the new weapon- the composition and number of the crew, the armament of the machine, the conditions under which the men fight-can an answer be found in these pages. A question is frequently put to a Tank man as to the heat inside during an action,in reply to which the following may be quoted: "With the prolonged running at high speed the interior of the Tank rapidly became unbearable through beat and petrol fumes, and the crew were forced to evacuate it and to take cover un. derneath. At this moment, two of the crew were wounded, one was sick, one fainted, and one was delirious." The above is in re 'ference to a hardeneed, fully- trained Crew. Regarding the some mach-

ine

occasions, gunners, on carried into action in a specially. designed Tank, the author re- marks: The motion, the hont, and the fumes of the inside of a Tank closed for action almost invariably proved too much for all but the Tank's own well-salted crew. Consequently, where little fire had been met with, the mach-

While enjoying immunity from rile and machine-gun fire, as well as from shell splinters and shrap- al. the Tank personnel ran an exclusive and horrible risk of their machine catching fire, and they themselves suffering the agonies of burning caused by the ignition of the petrol - Or petrol laden air of the interior.
