Women can sit in the House of Commons, and women can watch the proceedings from three public galleries. But the Press Gallery is still a masculine preserve. I say still advisedly; for the admis- sion of a woman journalist to report Lady Astor's introduction on Monday afternoon did not completely break down its barriers. All the seats in the Press Gallery are allotted by ticket, and ang application made on behalf of a woman journalist must be placed before a com- mittee of Gallery members. Early this year, when the restrict- ions regarding the presence of romen in the galleries hither- to reserved for men were removed the editor of a lady's paper applied for a seat for a woman represent- ative. It was refused on the ground that the accommodation was still insufficient to give seats to all the men who were entitled to them.
The Press Gallery is more con- servative in its rules and regula- tions than Parliament itself. From my conversation with several of its members on Mon- day, I gathered the impression that my sex was not really want- ed there. "Is there a new rule." asked one pressman. I set his mind at rest by explaining that it: was a special occasion. No unkind or unchivalrous remarks were made in my hearing; but looks were challenging.
