The struggle which has been going on in the Old World to make secure the former sup- remacy of the British mercantile marine is not less serious for the interests of the Empire on the Pacific Ocean.
It is not long since the forma- tion of a gigantic shipping com- bine in Japan with the avowed object of making that courtry the radiating point of a vast system of ocean transportation. During the war great strides have been made by Japanese shipping. It is well known that the annual output of Japanese shipbuilding yards has almost doubled in the past three years, but it is also noteworthy that a recent de- spatch from Japan pointed out that, owing to heavy freight rates and the increased cost of labour, steel ships were now costing as much ав $187 per ton 10 build-this is what has been regarded as one of the cheapest labour markets in the world. A short time ago there travelled & small party of Japanese shipping men who were travelling to many of the 'principal ports in America and Europe with the object of gaining all the information possible as to port regulation, and equipment in order that their own ports may possess all that is most up to date in this direction.
Apropos of this it is rather a dismal comment on Canadian enterprise to observe that certain Japanese shipping lines which formerly made Vancouver a regular port of call have now eliminated this port from their list in favour of the better- equipped and larger port of Seattle. A: the preserit
