TIMBERS OF MALAY PENINSULA.
The forest services of the Federated Malay Straits and Straits Settlements have been amalgamated under Mr. E. Cubitt. Conservator of Forests, who has written an interesting report of thelwork of his Department in 1918. from which it would appear that there is a promi-ing future for the exploitation of the timberl trade of British Malaya. Revenue collected during the year amount- ed to £10.997, or £33.892 more than in 1917 This result is attributable chiefly to the demand for fuel for the tin mines, which coaki

By far the most important work of the year Was the identification and classification of the commercial timbers. The study of the timbers of the Penin- sula is being continued, and it is expected that a fairly comprehen- sive work on the subject will soon be published. The Conser- vator has no hesitation in saving that what has already been done is the most important plece of scientific work to the credit of his Department, and that with- out the knowledge and experience of Dr. Foxworthy (Forest Re- search Officer) it would have been impossible of accomplishment in five years, Requests were re- ceived fortimber for the construct- ion of aeroplanes and tests were carried out with a number of species thought to be suitable. The results of these tests were communicated to the authorities in India and Londor, and there is every reason to believe that suitable timber will be found. in Malaya for this work. Practical
