ITALIAN SHIP FROM AMERICA. The Italian High Commission in the United States is asking American shipbuilders to furnish figuresshowing what tonnage they can deliver and the delivery dates. In explaining this the Tommis- stoners say that they have been asked to sound out the situation) by Italian interests, and that while no aggregate amount of the tourage desired has been made public. the amount will probably be considerable. Just what the volume of business done" with Italy will be, will depend on just what financial arrangements can be affected.

THE EFFICIENCY OF TONNAGE.

Since the Armistice, the efficiency of tonnage, owing to the delays of coaling; docking, and loading at least one-third less than before the war. The world | Blaka Pier). has a. surplus of tonnage at the present time.

1n June last year there was 47,500,000 grass tons, two million and a half in excess of the pre-war total. By the end of the year the pre-war figure was increased 10 per

cent. After the next few months there will be a gradual decline in freight rates, America having created a great merchant marine, cannot be expected to scrap either her shipbuilding plants or her 'ehips. The port congestion in Great Britain is a passing phase. According to the statistics of Lloyd's Register of Shipping, there was 5 per cent. more tonnage afloat in June 1919, despite war losses, then register- ed before the outbreak of war, and at the end of last year there was 10 per cent, more..
