NEW JAPANESE SERVICE TO SWANSHA.

A

The U.S. Vice-Consul at Swan; sea, Wales, reports as follows!- The Japanese steamship line. Sippon Yusen Kaisha, has estab. lished a freight service between Swansea and the East. The coin-

formerly maintained pany regular service between Glasgow and Birkenhead and the ports of Singapore. Hongkong, Shanghai Kobe, and Yokohama, and Swan- sea is now to be included in this service, being the first time that it has been made a regular port of call for a Japanese steam ship line. As Swansea exports large quantities of tin plates and galvanized sheets to Japan and China, the Japanese will be able to secure important outward cargoes of this kind, and in this trade they will be keon com- petitors of the Lamport and Hol: Line, of Liverpool.

THE U.S. MERCANTILE MARINE, Senator Jones, the chairmen of the US. Senate Committee. is optimistic.

In bill providing for a permanent federal sipping policy he says that assunting tie

Government's Shipbuilding programme is carried

out, the States would have at the end of 1929 a merchant fleet Totalling 18.000.000 tons. But

willst be carried out? There are some evidences that the U.S. Government is not greatly enamoured of the idea of working

owns, and we may take it that the difficulties which now ecr front it in this task will certainly not be lessened. Mr. Jones dis- claims the idea. following the long aro expressed opinion of the chairman of the Shipping Board j of attempting to drive other na- tions off the sea. Of course we may take it that the allusion is to Great Britain and Mr. Jones may be perfectly easy in his mind on that point for it is the most unlikely thing that could happen. BRITISH CAPTAIN HONOURED. On January 7, 1918, whilst onl a voyage from London to Dublin, the steamer Sodium rescued the crew of the Norwegian vessel Exda, of Berger, all of whom

The plight of the Norwegian seemen Wes £ desperate one, but by the careful manoeuvring of his ship Captain Campbell, of the Sodiun, got all eafely on board, and they were eventually landed in Milford Haven. The circumstances in which the rescue was effected were brought to the notice of the Norwegian Consul in Livepool, Mr. Johan Vogt, by the Imperial Merchant Service Guild, who has now informed the secrtary that "by Royal Resolution of the 10th October, 1919, Captain Hugh Campbell has been granted a piece of silver, with inscription, in recognition of meritorious conduct rendered in the saving of the crew of the Egda, of Bergen, when she was sunk od the 7th January, 1918, by German U boat.”
