TIENTSIN-PEKING ROAD.

The survey for the new Tien- tsin-Peking Road has been completed, and it is reported that an endeavour will be made to complete the work this year. The road will be about six miles shorter than the railway line, and with a smooth surface, few curves, and but slight gradients, will be attractive to motorist. It will have a width of 80 feet.

A USEFUL OJDY. Dr. Alfred Moore, M.D., Assis-. tant Medicul Officer of Health. Shanghai. in the course of an article in the Journal of Tropical Medwine and Hygiene gives some practical suggestions for a simple method of mounting and preserv ing insects, etc. He points out that if more medical men, re- sident in remote tropical stations, could be induced to take up the study" of entomology. the result could scarcely fail to he of immense advantage

themselves, to

in- and of estimable benefit to science and their fellow-men, for this pursuit is not merely a most delightful hobby well calculated to banish eunui from the monotonous re- stricted life of the isolated exile. but is also a comparatively unexplored field for research werk, of vast practical import- ance w suffering humanity.

LORD FISHER'S RECORDS. Another "Record" is provided by the publication of a letter written at Admiralty House. Portsmouth. April 20, 1904, to a

high official," on the subject of the submarine. Lord Fisher then considered our paucity of sub- marines as the not serious thing at present affecting the British Empire! That sounds Ly, but it's true. Had either the Russians or the Japanese had submarine the whole face of their war would have been changed for both sides. It really me laugh to read of makes

Admiral Togo's righth attack on Port Arthur!" Why had he possessed submarines it would have been attack and DA arrack only! It would have been all over with the whole Russian Fleet, caught like rats in a trap! Similarly, the Japanese Admiral Togo outside would never have dared to let his transports full of troops pursue the even tenor of their way to Chemulpo and else. where!

CHINESE GOODS.

Not only only has the Chinese Government decided to maintain the official worship of Confucius, but the Presidents (the present one, for instance, in a mandate of September 25) have officially de- rided, at the instance of the Peking Home Office, to change the date of the autumn sacrifices to the two "Gods of War" to October 13 each year. The Gre- gorian Calender is now used for official purposes, although the old lunar calendar is still extensively used by agriculturists, women. and old cranks," or lao-wan-ku, as the Chinesse call them. The two "Gods of War" are Kwan Ti, alias General Kwan Yu, who perished at the beginning of the third century whilst fighting for the legitimate dynasty, and Gen- eral Yoh Fei, who in the twelfth century defended China against, the inroads of the *Golden "* Tartars (ie., Early Manchus). Several dynasties have tinkered with these two canonisations, which are now joined in one Temple Shrinë ia all provinces.— Westminis Gazette.
