in sea transport after 12 months of peace, says a Home journal, freight rates in all directi 315 ruling on a very satisfactory basis, whilst capital values of tonnage of all descriptions have not only been maintained, but in many instances increased current figures tending to show a further expansion. The demand for all classes of tonnage has in conse quence been materially stimulated especially in view of the reticenc? of builders to take orders for new boats, the fears of labour trouble. though not perhaps as acute at the moment, tending to repress
restricting orders to a "time and line" basis.

and when it comes to good sound seamanship, and naviga. tion, and we sincerely trust that the time will never come that there will be the slightest dang r that our great heritage u this) respect will pass from us.
Hap- pily there seems to be no pos- sibility of any such thing hap- pening at the present timp. A short though extremely interest- ing account bas recently reached the secretary of the Imperial Merchant Service Guild regard-| ing the fine feat of navigation recently performed by a meuber in the person of Commander R. Bowling, R.N.R., win is in com- mand of the steamer Bayrainge owse by the Bay Steamship Company, of London. As we feel that it will be of very HaichingTM great interest to seafarers Quinnebaug of all kinds, wo give the account berewith: "The steamer Baymingo (5,000 tons), belong ing to the Bay Steamship Com- pany, of London, Commander R. Dowling," R. N. R., left Liverpool on July 31st, 1919, bound for the Kara Sea, N. Siberia, to inaugu rate a new trading venture in conjunction with the Hudson Bay Company and the Merchant Trading Company, of London. The Baymingo was the pioneer. She called at Tromso to emberk a passenger and ice pilots, thence proceeded to the Kara Straits early in August, which she found an impregnable sea of ice. She then proceeded south to the Yugorski Strait, which was su cessfully negotiated after some mishaps and delay, and eventual- ly reached her goal, the Gulf of Obi. The exchange of cargoes- no money in N. Siberia-(all deals being effected by barter) having been successfully arranged by the staff sent out to do the trading part. The Baymingo left again for Tromso on September 20th, and after encountering bad wea ther in the North sea, duly

of the matter is that Commander Dowling accomplished with a large ship what Hansen shied at with a small one. He had a fine crew of picked officers and men. to whom he gives unstinted praise. The task of getting out of the icc in the Kara Strait was superhu- man, and at one time the situa tion was serious. The region round about is very indifferaitly surveyed and charted, and valu able information has thus been given to the world respecting it. So much do the companies Can- cerned appreciate the work passengers. accomplished that silver and bronze-medals have been strak to commemorate tha e73al, of j which one has been presented to each member of the ship's com pany. On one side is an inscrip tion, with a picture of the ship on the los on the reverse.”
