Owing to encouraging reports from America, where a severe shortage of stocks is now being experienced, in Japan the vegeta- ble oil market has been growing very firm of late. Soya bean oil is quoted at present in the vicinity of Y35 per 100 kin for January and February delivery. ground nut oil at about Y43.50 for. December and January delivery - speculative price, and about Y4 higher than American ideas. Cotton-oil is also firm, standing in the neighbourhood of 41 for spot. The tendency of the mar| ket is towards further activity. It must, however, be noted that the trade with Englar and France, though there is a fairly large demand from those coun- tries. is at present harpered through the unfavourable rate of exchange, or, rather by the reluc- tince of British and French buyers to admit the depreciation NILA LINE Evicted with Marila by vastels with good i antiguo 1990)

оп
A goodly proportion of Can- dian wheat destined for Euro-l pean markets is conveyed from Western Canada to eastern ports by huge freight.vessels which ply on the great Canadian lakes. One of these giant vessels, the s.s. W. Grant Horden, of the Canada Steam Ship Lines, recently left Port Arthur her voyage of 2,900 miles acress the Dominion's inland water- ways with a cargo of no less than 504,900 bushels of wheat on board, a quantity more than 25 times as great as that carried by the largest steamer 20 years ago. the old days grain was loaded into ships by wheelbarrows, now it is shipped at the ra e of 100,000 bushels per 75 minutes with the aid of modern machinery..
