A bill is how pending in the United States Senate providing for the laying of a new cable across the Pacific. The present cable system has been found quite inadequate to cope with the enormous demands made on it by business houses and people in the Far East and in America. The new cable when it is laid will greatly relieve present condi. tions,

The total number and tonnage of vessels which entered and cleared at Amoy during 1918 was 1,148 vessels of 1,250,111 tons, sbowing, when compared with 1917, a decrease of 231 vessels and 395,489 tona. The per- centages of the various flags were: 17.8 per cent. British; 39.3 per cent. Japanese; 7.2 per cent. Dutch; 5.0 per cent. Chinese; 0.5 per cent. American; and 0.2 per cent. Portuguese.
