THE PORT OF HAVRE. The work of enlarging the Port of Havre is being under: taken with rapidity. The west dock is now completed: the south dock is also finished, with the ex ception of a part of its coping: the eastern dock is also proaching completion: and the new quay, 500 metres long is quite ready. The deepening of the exterior passage is going on actively, and two-thirds of the dredging has been effected. Less advanced, however, is the work connected with the dock on the south bank of the Tancarville Canal; in fact, only one-fifth of the dredging necessary has been done. As regards exploitation of the port, the situation is fairly the congestion difficult and is still very great. The Eng- lish-base, nevertheless, is contin ually lessening. The Ministe: of Public Works has ordered the State Railways to take all the necessary steps to supply all the rolling stock to the port which may be needed. The equipment 15th Jan. 23rd Jan. placed on the tidal quay. Six are already in service and three are in course of erection... In! spite of this the congestion at the port is steadily increasing. For the week ended August 25 the quantity of cargo awaiting removal was 232,000 tons, against 216,000 for they preceding week. During this period the removals. represented 66,039 tons, of which 19.400 tons were sent by rail, 14,507 by lighters, 10,600 by coasting craft, and 7,072 by ocean-going steamers, whilst 15,- 000 went for local consumption.
