GOLF.
MR. DODWELL'S LECTURE.
Of particular interest to golfers was the lecture which Mr. S. H. Dodwell gave on golf last evening at the Helena May Institute to a large attendance, which included a big sprinkling of ladies.
The lecturer commenced by giving a brief outline of the history of golf. Golf, he said, appeared to have been played before the year 1457 A.D. At that time it received Parliament- ary notice; in fact, legisla- tion was introduced to put a stop to it. He supposed that was
account of
the fact that the youth of those days extended their games into the week-ends. Fortunately, golf survived and in the year A.D. 1503, they were told, it WAS extensively played by the King- At that time King Henry VI and James IV were the respective Kings of England and Scotland. It was doubtful which King it was who extensively indulged in the sport.
The Scots said
it was James, who needed golf to console him in his adversities. The English said it was King- Henry VI, but whatever the) Scots might have to say about the origin of the game, it was to England that the credit was due of having founded the first golf club in history, the Royal Black- heath Golf Clab being established in 1608. True, golf was first mentioned as being played at St. Andrew's in 1552, but it was not) until 202 years afterwards that thei inhabitants decided to form them- selves into a Club in 1734. From then on we did not hear much abou: the game until in 1848, the gutta ball replaced the old featheri stufed ball, while in 1860 the first open Championship was played and won by Willie Park senior, and three years later King Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, was unanimously elected Captain of the Royal and and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. a great honour for the King. After that, the history of golf was familiar to most of them. He did not propose to deal further with that history but to speak on some points on golf.
An eminent writer, who was -himself a great enthusiast of ilie game, had said of golf that it was a test calling for courage, skill, strategy and self-control. It was
test of temper: a trial of honour. It took them out into the
open air and brought them closer to Nature. It swept away the mental cobwebs, was a cure for care and an antidote to worry. It gave opportunity for) friendly companionship, courtesy, appreciation of each other. About two months ago, the lecturer said, he received a letter from the able Secretary of their Educational Committee requesting him to give a lecture on golf. She concluded by saying that she was sure that an able demonstrator of the game Jike he was would need little preparation to give the lecture. Realising that apparently the Educational Committee of the Institute had come to realise golf as half of the education of women, he was naturally very anxious to further the move- ment. Unfortunately at that time he was not able to play good" rolf and it would be ungraceful | for him to get up and announce himself as a demonstrator of the game. He made a promise that if be came out winner in the championship he would give the lecture. It turning out otherwise, b went home disconeciate at

the
being out of the championship and disconsolate at the opportunity of giving lecture. Next day the Director of Education's chit book
his desk
WAS
on
and
in it he found a letter containing a repetition of the request for the lecture.
Continuing, the lecturer said that no one had met with fewer successes and more disappoint- ments than he. From these trials he must draw some, conclusions, on which, combined with the teachings of 'great masters of the game, he would make some remarks with the view to their improving their game a little..

HAWKER'S DEATH.
MURDER SUSPECTED.
Mystery surrounds the case of· Chinese whose dead body was yesterday picked up by the Water Police from the harbour at a point off the Gas Works," To all appearances, murder had been committed, as it was found that round the neck a rope was tied, one end of which was attached to a granite boulder weighing some 82 lbs. The body, which
in
AD advanced stato of decomposition, bore several wounds which evid- ently had been inflicted with dagger. The conclusion arrived at from theso discoveries was that after having been stabbed, probably on some boat, the body of the man was dumped in the sea.

Later on, when the body was removed to the Kowloon Mortu- ary, it was identified as that of a hawker. 39 years of ago, whoa8 relatives had missed him since the 30th November.
