In view of the great fall in the RAMSAY & CO.
value of the rouble it is interest- ing to note that Japan's trade, with Russia is now much depress- ed. The paralysed state of trans- portation is a still more adverse factor. Indeed it is complained that the security of living, of residents in Siberia is being daily threatened and many of them are moving into Vladivostok, where things are Baid to be in little better state. The plight of the inhabitants in the interior districts is reported to be wretched, neither boats nor clothing being obtainable and stocks of fuel and food being rapidly exhausted. It is therefore not impossible that if the present state of affairs is left unremedied people will simply run wild, only the able bandits being likely to survive. It seems that

fact is causing much concern among the Japanese merchants engaged in the Russian trade, 25 they anticipate the possibility of their trade being completely paralysed. They are now quite at sea as to what they will do in
