SOME INTERESTING FACTS -
There has been a controversy in the Weekly Scotsman as to who raised the Seaforth Highlanders. One writer (W. J. Flack) says it is hardly correct to state that the Seaforth Highlanders were raised by Lord Macleod of Cromarty. The regiment raised by Macleod and known as Macleod's High- larders was at first numbered the 73rd in 1777;in 1786 it became the 1st, and Bat-
is now the famous 1st talion Highland Light Infantry. It was embodied a. Elgin in 1777, and consisted of 840 High- landers, and 34 English and Irish. They wore the Macleod tartan, but the kilt was discontinued dur ing their Indian service, 179-98* They became light infantry in 1809. and adopted the trews of Mackenzie) tartan, which they still wear.
The Seaforth Highlanders were. prior to 1881, known as the 72nd (Duke of Albany's) Highlanders, and the 78th Highlanders (Ross- shire Buffs.) The 1st battalion was raised in 1778 by the Earl of Seaforth, and consisted of 1130 men, 500 from Seaforth's estate, with 400 Mackenzies from Scat- well, Kilcoy, Applecross,
and Redcastle, 200 Lowlanders, and English and Irish. They were at first numbered the 78th, but in 1786 became the 72nd.
A MUTINY INCIDENT. Embodied at Elgin, May 1778. they were sent to Leith to embark for India, in August of that year, when the regiment suddenly mutinied, marched to Arthur's Seat, and dug themselves in. The women of Edinburgh, Leità, and Musselburg

said to have carried provisions in their shawls up to the High- landers who got the name of the "Wild. Macraes" from this episode. There were many Macraes amongst them from Seaforth's estate. The 11th Dra-. gcons (now Hussars), 83rd Glas- gow regiment, and the Buccleuch Fencibles were sent against them, but the Highlanders were eventu ally pardoned, and sent to the Channel Islands, where they
