UKRAINE MASSACRES,"

CONDITION OF JEWS UNDER BOLSHEVISM,

The Jewish representatives of the Zion Organisation. Dr. R Corsinik, a well-known Russian publicist, and Mr. Meir Gross- mag, of the Jewish National; Assembly in the Ukraine, who have been inquiring into the massacres of Jews in the Ukraine, attended a special meet- ing of the Ztonis: Organisation recently at the headquarters in London. They stated that from the end of last November down to the present time these bad been a series of pogroms, con- mitted partly by the troops, partly

civilian population (especially by the lower middle classes), and partly br the peasants and workman. The principle culprits were soldiers? and Bolsheviks. In the case of the latter their military com. maniers took rigorous measures against them, and many hundreds were shot. But the military authorities had to yield to the anti-Semitic feeling to the extent of refraining from sending Jewish commissaries to the front. The excesses had been greatest since April last. In one ではおご さな Trostienietz all the Jewish in- habitants of the little town, even children of twelve years of age. were murdered, more than 480 persons being slain.

From an exact record drawn by the Jewish National up Secretariat from Novembet, 1916. to May. 1919, progroms and excesses were recorded to have taken place in 127 places, and the total number of Jews said to have been killed was from 30,000 to 35,000. These figures probably fell short of the actual truth, The Jowe tried to organize a self- defence. but this was not per- mitted by the Bolsheviks.

General Jewish conditions were deplorable. Länder the Bolshevik regime nothing had been left of national autonomy. The Jewish parties had beer. completely disbanded and Jewish newspapers prohibited with one exception, and that appeared in Yiddish Schools where Hebrew was used were also prohibited. but the Yiddish language was encouraged. NEW IDEAS EVIDENT.

Those about to be married are now apt, it seems, to give con- siderable shocks to the shop- keeper who is still not quite detached from pre-war traditions. The ex-soldier has a new eye for comfort, and has little use for the merely pretty or ornamental. The ex-war worker, faced with the prospect of domestic life with- out a maid, will look at nothing that is is likely to cause more than the minimum of work.

It's a queer business serving young couples now-a-days," said an elderly assistant in a furniture store recently.
