The Christian World avers that an official investigation bas shown that "the United States uses more opium than any other country, taking ten times as much as the next country on the list, and sixty times as much as the country at the bottom of the list. Over a million persons in the United States are said to be addicted to opium.
A NEW METAK Biakmetal, the new zinc-copper alloy of Adolfo Pouchain, Italian engineer, is claimed to be stronger than steel and less corrosive than copper, its chief qualities being the highest known breaking point, highest limit of elasticity, perfect homogeneity, and high resistance to heat and chemical action. It can be cast, turned, drawn, for. ged, rolled, and stau ped. It can be substituted for steel, brass and aluminum, and is claimed to have important advantages over these metals for certain uses.
PATRIOTIC DORSET VILLAGE. A German field gun has been presented to the village of Shill- ingstone. Dorset, which, for its size, sent the largest number of recruits to the Navy and Army during the first six months of the war. The presentation was made by Lord Shaftesbury, Lord Lieutenant of the county, who was supported by the Mayor and Corporation of Blandford, Lady Shaftesbury. Mrs. Kyrle Chap man (donor of the site), and others. An Ionic cross was also dedicated to the memory of the men of Shillingstone who fell dur- ing the war, the Bishop of Salis- bury officiating at the ceremony.

NEW TUNNEL AT THE ZOO. Although in normal times the collection of animals at the Zoo- logical Gardens in Regent's Park is the best in Europe, the actual area of the ground is much smaller than that of any other well-known garden. Moreover, itis inconveniently subdivided by the Outer Circle-road and the Regent's Canal. The northera strip. between Albert-road and the Canal, is now connected with the middle garden by a bridge at each end, but a single tunnel, danger- pusly congested on crowded days, is the only means of communica tion with the main garden. Before the war a scheme for the rear- rangement of the Gardens, to be completed gradually, wes ap- proved by the Fellows, and in- |cluded a second tunnel, close to the main gate. The construction of this tunnel, which was suspended in 1914, has now been resumed, and the contractors hope to finish it during the winter. The south entrance to the tunnel will join, the main pathway, leading to the south gate where the path from the main gate to the Mappin Terraces crosses it. It was part of the original scheme that the point of crossing should be mark- ed by a clock tower, to serve as á readily visible direction post for. visitors. It has been decided to set up instead of this a memorial to the members of the staff killed in the war.
