GENERAL NEWS.

MADE IN GERMANY. Mr. MacVeagh has been show- ing in the Lobby of the House of Commons a small plaster cast of Sir Edward Carson, bearing the words made familiar by Lord' Randolph Churchill in 1885, **Ulster will fight, and Ulster will be right." Also inscribed on it, in clear lettering, is the trade | mark, "Made in Germany.”

BIG FURNITURE STORE FIRE Damage amounting to at least £50,000 was done by fire recently at the premises of Messrs. Joseph Harris and Sons, carriers and furniture storers, Longwood, near Huddersfield. The property des- troyed included four steam motor- wagons, two motor char-a-bancs, and about 130 vanloads of private house furniture which was in store.

A NEW USE FOR POISON GAS.

A new use has been found for poison gas. A lady was waiting för a bus in a London street when poxious fumes overcame ber. She was taken suddenly with nausea, giddiness, and faintness -but after a few moments was able to pull herself together. She then found that a large parcel, the string of which had been wound round her hand, had been stolen, the string having been neatly cut. The doctor who attended her decided she bad been "gassed."

CHINESE FINANCIAL MUDDLE.

Our Tientsin contemporary, the N. C. D. Mail, says "The present financial muddle is just about as serious as it well could be, Government Bank Notes in Peking are only worth about half of their face value and there is an unpleasant likelihood of their depreciating still further. Every now and then one hears of experts being called in to suggest remedies whereby their value can be appreciated, but nothing yet done seems to be of any use whatever."

A GOLFING ACCIDENT.

A remarkable accident occurred during a golf tournament on the St. Augustine's Links at Ebbsfleet, Thanet. At one point the links. adjoin the main road between Sandwich and Ramsgate, and es a ball was being played by Mr. Chapman, of Richborough, motor-car came into the line of fight along the road and the driver, George Thomas Castle, of King-street. Ramsgate, wa struck in the eye. The injury "way so serious that on the admis- sion of the patient to Ramsgate Hospital it was found necessaTY to remove his eye.

AN ARMOURED CAR'S DASH. The survivors of the ship Tara, about 60 in number. visited Saighton Grange, Chester, re- cently, to make a presentation to the Duke of Westminster as a mark of gratitude for their rescue by him from the Sonussi Arabs by his armoured car dash across the desert in 1916; after their ship had been torpedoed in the Gulf of Sollum. The gift, which was jointly presented by the survivors of the Tare and sever-1 from the Moorina, consisted of a silver casket surmounted by a miniature armoured car and bearing an inscription. Captain Tanner said that when the Duke saved the captives' lives they! were within five days of death from starvation. Captain Rupert Gwatkin Williams also spoke and told the story of the Duke's dash. In acknowleging the gift the Duke said the rescue party only did their plain duty. The crews had gone through a fearful time and had borne themselves like true Britons.

TRAIN FERRIES. Modern Transport states that the Societe Centrale des Ferry Boats has acquired the rights previously held by the Inter- Continental Railway Company (Limited), for the establishment of a train ferry service between Newhaven and Dieppe, with the support of the International Sleeping Car Company and of the French Government A further object of the company is to in- augurate a similarservice between Harwich and Ostend supported, it is stated, by the Great Eastern Railway Company and the Belgian Minister of Marine. The journal saysTeaders bave already been invited from selected list of British shipbuild- ers on the Tyne, Clyde, and Mersey, on a specification for. 21-knot vessels accommodating 22 20-ton wagons, or 10 goods wagons and a train of eight passenger vehicles. A farther scheme is that for a train ferry service between Gothenburg and a port on the Humber, either Hall or Immingham. The Swedish Railway Board is understood to have decided on a steam ferry in preference to a steamship service, The ferry-boats era to be provided with four tracks capable of accommodating 50 cara, aqui- valent to an annual cargo of
