His Government consequently was unable to reject the Bolshe- vik peace overtures conditionally on the Balsheviks evacuak- ing Lettish territory.

Reuter's correspondent at Copenhagen learns from an official Lettish source that the Baltic States are consider- ing peace in close touch with the Allied representatives. Baltic statesmen have gone to Reval where it is under- stood a Baltic Alliance is bring discussed in conjunction. with the Finnish representatives:

ALLENBY'S WORK.

London, Sept. 16.

Replying to an address of welcome at Dover Sir Ed- mund Allenby said that when he went Egpyt two years ago he did not know what was going to happen, but he soon found he owed much to Sir Archibald Murray, who had crossed the Sinai desert and forced back the Turkish Bank to Beersheba. Their fanks were the ses and the desert, but Sir Archibald had done his work of preparation for victory. He had laid a standard guage railway across the desert and brought the sweet waters of Egypt to the army by pipes. Sir Edmund Allenby mentioned that his army was cosmopolitan, comprising British, French, Al- gerians, Armenians, Italians, Arabs, Indians, West Indians, New Zealanders and Egyptiana. Towards the close of the campaign two-thirds of the army were Mohammadans and there were no more loyal troops to the cause of the Empire.

THE STEEL TRADE AFFECTED.

1919.

The Iron Age of August 7, Bays

Actual stoppage of pig iron and steel making by railroad strikes in the Cleveland and Chicago districts in the past week has given more weight to the possibility of curtailment, by strikes in the steel industry itself. Blast furnaces and steel works operations of the American Steel and Wire Company; at Cleveland have been largely suspended. At the South Chicago works of the Illinois Steel Co. seven out of twelve blast furnaces are banked, and at Gary fourteen out of forty-four open-hearth furnaces are idle. The unionis- ing of blast furnace and steel plant workers in the Pittsburgh and Ohio-districts has shown'no marked progress in the weak, but the outlook is more threatening because of the railroad shopmen's strike and a new uncertainty bas entered into the prospect for the remainder of the year.

Export trade picked up toward the end of July” after a quieter fortnight. The placing of 150 locomotives for Poland with the Baldwin Locomotive Works which accepts ten-year equip- ment notes, came after long negotiations. Orders for 8,000 to 10,000 cars are expected to follow, but the arrangements of a car trust may be long drawn' out. Thus far manufacturers have been more active than bankers on these European deals and the need of strong leadership has been marked.

A fully financed enterprise, the Tata Steel Works in India, is figuring on American Steel for large additions which will take nearly nearly 20,000 toas of structural shapes. British works cannot meet the deliveries wanted.

"These is some confusion in news from Europe, with uncon- firmed reports of American capital figuring. Americans, for example, are reported to have acquired control of an Austrian steel plant. Thirty steamers are expected soon to, load Swedish ore for German blast furnaces.

Shipyard developments have been important. Standard Oil, fruit company and trawler orders represent upward of 20,000 toas of plates. The Steel Corporation's notable programme, now in pro cass, calls for eleven ships to be built at its Federal yard and ten at its Mobile yard.

Chicago makers of rail carbon bars advanced their prices $2 because of the high price of rerolling rails. Large structural rivets and boiler rivets have advanced $4 a ton.

The tendency to advance pig iron prices is seen both in South- era and Buffallo district products, One Southern producer put up prices 75 cents from August 1.

SECRET FOREIGN MONEY.

TO FOMENT UNREST IN

ENGLAND.

The authorities at Scotlani Yard claim to have definite infor- mation that foreign money has been sent to England for the pur- pose of financing agitations with the object of stirring up strife and overthrowing the existing system of Government.

One of the heads of the recently formed Special Service Branch at Scotland Yard, of which Sir Basil Thomson is director, informed Daily Chronicle representative that an attempt made by Bela Kua to smuggleseveral thousands of pounds into England for this purpose had recently been dis- covered.

You can take it from me,! said the official, that the Bo sheviks are sending money over hero.

About two weeks ago ·à Norwegian' came over bringing, with trim Russian money amcuot- ing to nearly £6,000. He delivered it to a rainor revolutionary leader. Within a very short space of time the emissary was discovered, and made & full confession. He has since been deported to Norway. į "The individual concerned denied that he ever received the money, but there is no doubt at all about the facts.

"It has also been ascertained that the money came originally from Bela Kun.""
